I get this question more than any other. More than questions about heat distribution. More than questions about the battery. More than questions about me, which is saying something.

The question is: is an electric hookah just a big vape?

The answer is no.

I have been over this several times. I will be over it several more. So here is the version I am going to write down so I can stop explaining it in person.

What a vape actually is

A vape heats e-liquid. The liquid contains nicotine, flavoring, and a base of propylene glycol or vegetable glycerin. An atomizer turns the liquid into vapor. You inhale the vapor.

There is no bowl. There is no shisha tobacco. There is no water in the base. There is no hose. There is no coal because there is also no bowl that would need one.

A vape is a self-contained electronic device that converts liquid into vapor and delivers it directly to your mouth.

That is what a vape is. It is not what a hookah is. It is not what VOLTA is.

What VOLTA actually is

VOLTA is a heat management device. It replaces the coal that sits on top of a hookah bowl. That is its job.

Your hookah is still your hookah. The bowl is the same bowl. The base is the same base. The water is still in it. The hose is still there. The shisha tobacco you pack is the same shisha you have always packed.

VOLTA sits where the coal used to sit. It heats the tobacco. The hookah does the rest.

What you inhale is the same thing you have always inhaled when smoking traditional hookah: smoke from heated shisha tobacco, cooled by water, pulled through the hose. No e-liquid. No atomized nicotine solution. No fog from a coil. Real shisha smoke from real shisha tobacco.

Why people get confused

I understand where the confusion comes from. VOLTA has a battery. It has an OLED display. It charges via USB-C. From a distance, this looks like vape territory.

But none of that changes what is happening with the tobacco. The tobacco is being heated. That has been happening for as long as hookahs have existed. The only thing different is what is producing the heat.

For most of that history, the heat came from burning material on top of the bowl. Now it comes from precision electric heating from the top and surrounding sides simultaneously. The mechanism changed. The product did not.

You can put a USB-C port on an old object and it remains an old object. VOLTA is a heater with modern electronics. It is not a different category of device.

What stays the same

Here is what does not change when you switch from coal to VOLTA.

Component With coal With VOLTA
Hookah base Same Same
Water in base Same Same
Hose Same Same
Bowl Same Same
Shisha mo Same Same
What you inhale Shisha smoke Shisha smoke
The ritual Same Same
The coal Required Gone

Everything except the coal stays exactly where it was. The session works the same way. The flavors work the same way. The water still cools the smoke. The hose still passes around.

VOLTA replaces one component. That is all it does. It just does that one component significantly better than coal did.

Where the resemblance ends

Vapes and electric hookah heaters share two things. They have batteries. They have electronics. That is the entire overlap.

Everything else is different. The fuel is different. The output is different. The setup is different. The cultural context is different. The reason you use one in the first place is different.

If someone calls VOLTA a vape, they are either being imprecise or they have never used a hookah. Both are forgivable. Neither is correct.

Why this matters

There is a real reason to get this right. Hookah culture is older than every electronic category combined. It has a tradition. It has a ritual. It has communities built around it across multiple continents.

Calling an electric hookah heater "a vape" collapses all of that into the wrong category. It puts a centuries-old social ritual in the same bucket as a disposable device that did not exist before 2007.

VOLTA was built specifically because hookah deserves better technology, not because it deserves to be replaced with something else. The hookah is the point. The coal was the problem. We removed the coal. The hookah is still here.

That is the difference. I will not be repeating it.

Frequently asked questions

Does VOLTA contain nicotine or e-liquid?

No. VOLTA contains no tobacco, no nicotine, and no consumable materials of any kind. It is a heater. You provide the shisha tobacco yourself, the same way you would with coal.

Do you still pack a bowl with VOLTA?

Yes. You pack a ceramic chamber exactly the way you would pack any hookah bowl. The only difference is what sits on top of it to provide the heat.

Can you use any kind of shisha with VOLTA?

VOLTA works with standard shisha tobacco, including dark leaf and blonde leaf. Around 10g per session is the recommended amount.

Is electric hookah the same as a pod or cartridge device?

No. Pod and cartridge devices fall into the vape category. They use sealed liquid cartridges. VOLTA uses an open ceramic chamber that you pack with shisha tobacco yourself.

Why does the question keep coming up if the answer is straightforward?

Because "electronic" has become shorthand for "vape" over the last decade. Anything with a battery and a display gets categorized that way by default. VOLTA looks electronic, so people reach for the closest familiar category. The category is wrong. The familiarity is not their fault.
