Every coal session starts from roughly the same place: a guess. You know your setup, you know approximately what works, but you're recalibrating from scratch every time. The coal behaves differently. The pack is slightly off. Good sessions happen, but they happen because everything lined up, not because you engineered it.
Electric hookah heating removes most of those variables. What presets add on top of that is the ability to lock in what works, name it, and load it next session.
The problem presets solve
Heat management by feel is a skill. But it doesn't transfer between sessions cleanly. The coal was different. The tobacco had a different moisture level. You packed slightly denser.
With VOLTA, the heat is the one variable you can fix. Presets are how you fix it permanently for a specific setup. This is not a feature for beginners. It's for people who know exactly what a good session looks like and want to reproduce it reliably.
What a preset actually contains
A preset on VOLTA is a saved heat profile β a temperature setting confirmed to work for a particular combination of bowl type, tobacco, and packing method.
A preset is named by you. "Phunnel dark leaf" tells you exactly what it was built for. "Preset 3" tells you nothing six weeks later.
Presets sync from the app to the VOLTA device and appear on the OLED display. You don't need your phone to use them after they're saved.
How to build a preset
You need the ShishaX app connected over Bluetooth and a session running.
Set up your hookah normally. Preheat VOLTA, start the session. Adjust heat in real time through the app until the session is right: smooth pulls, consistent flavor, the bowl running its full length without burning out. When you get there, save as a named preset.
The preset syncs to VOLTA immediately. If a new combination is unfamiliar, run two or three sessions before saving.
Using a preset in a session
Power on VOLTA. Scroll to your preset on the OLED display. Select it. VOLTA preheats to that profile. Approximately 12 minutes later, start. You don't adjust anything.
Every session with that setup starts at the end of the calibration process, not the beginning of it.
Example preset library
| Preset name | Bowl type | Tobacco | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phunnel dark | Phunnel | Dark leaf, medium pack | Lower heat, longer ramp. Sensitive to overheating. |
| Phunnel blonde | Phunnel | Blonde leaf, standard pack | Higher heat, forgiving. Good default starter. |
| Vortex dark | Vortex | Dark leaf, light pack | Slightly lower than phunnel dark. Monitor first pulls. |
| Egyptian social | Egyptian | Blonde leaf, full pack | Higher heat, more exposure. Short-session friendly. |
| Travel light | Phunnel | Blonde leaf, light pack | Lower heat to conserve battery. Portable setup. |
Frequently asked questions
What is the best temperature for hookah?
There is no single best temperature β it depends on tobacco type, bowl style, and packing density. The right approach is to run a session, adjust until it feels right, and save those settings as a preset. That preset becomes your best temperature for that specific setup.
How do I create a heat preset on VOLTA?
Connect VOLTA to the ShishaX app over Bluetooth and run a session. Adjust heat in real time until the session feels right. Save the current settings as a named preset. The preset syncs to VOLTA immediately.
How many presets can I save on VOLTA?
The ShishaX app stores up to 10 custom presets. All presets sync to the device and are selectable on the OLED display without the app.
Do presets work without the app?
Yes. Once saved and synced, presets appear on the on-device display. The app is only needed to create and edit them, not to use them.
Does a phunnel bowl need a different heat setting than an Egyptian bowl?
Generally yes. Phunnel bowls retain more heat and work well with a slightly lower temperature. Egyptian bowls may need slightly higher heat. Building separate presets for each is the practical solution.
